A special patient of Monash Health is spearheading a fundraiser to support cancer patients entering a new clinical trial.
The Dr Hope 2021 raffle is an initiative of Effie Atkins. Effie is a passionate advocate for cancer patients being able to access the latest treatments through clinical trials.
Effie has participated in two cancer clinical trials at Monash Health. These have allowed her to stay well and happy as a valuable member of our community as well as a wife, mother and grandmother.
Funds raised through the Dr Hope 2021 raffle will be used to support patients entering Monash Health cancer clinical trials, specifically the SerOzNET COVID-19 vaccine study. This is a study of how cancer patients respond to the various COVID-19 vaccines. Monash Health is leading this Australia-wide study which is also supported by Cancer Australia.
The trial is aiming at enrolling 500 patients. Monash Health has already enrolled nearly 300 oncology and haematology patients, including children with cancer aged 12 and over.
In addition to supporting the trial, money donated will partly fund a medical oncologist who is undertaking their PhD to work on the trial.
The Monash Health Oncology Research Unit is one of the largest clinical trials units in Melbourne. The unit has an active and exciting trials program, which enables Monash Health patients to benefit from early access to the world’s newest medications, treatments and therapies.
Cancer treatment options have improved significantly over the past 10 years, with many more new treatments becoming available, including immunotherapy and precision (or personalised) cancer treatments. Personalised treatments involve examining the DNA and the other material in the cancer cells to work out the best treatment for each individual patient.

Tickets will be drawn in a live Facebook announcement on Friday, 26 November 2021. Winners will be notified by phone and email within 7 days of the draw.
