Each year, Monash Health cares for a large number of children with eating disorders.
A new community appeal, run by the Monash Health Foundation, is raising funds to help create a specialist mental health service for adolescents with eating disorders.
Professor David Clarke, Program Director of Mental Health explains:
“There has been growing demand for the treatment and care of children as young as 14 with eating disorders, and this has been especially noticed during the COVID period,” David said.
“With the support of donors, our eating disorders service will design a fresh, purpose-built facility to meet this increased demand with a contemporary model of care,” he said.
“Our aim is to provide support to the young person in a hospital setting for a short time while things become stabilised, when then they will leave and continue their recovery at home within the care of their family and extended network.”
The tailored and comprehensive new service will help:
• Provide effective treatment early in the course of illness in a friendly environment
• Support families during the episode of care
• Reduce the need for readmissions
• Reduce the traumatic experience sometimes associated with hospital care
